The Architect’s Newspaper is proud to announce its third annual Best Of Design Awards, a unique project-based awards program that showcases great buildings and building elements. Entrants are invited to submit completed works in 18 categories that reflect A|N’s editorial coverage, as well as the interests and obsessions of our readers. From the winners of these categories, one will be chosen as Project of the Year. The jury, composed of prominent architects and design professionals, will judge entries based on several criteria—strength of the presentation, evidence of innovation, creative use of new technology, sustainability, and, most importantly, good design. -- WINNERS Submission Categories . Building of the Year The Architect’s Newspaper publishes four regional editions—East, West, Midwest, and Southwest. We’re seeking the best new building in each of these regions. Adaptive Reuse Adaptive Reuse Architectural Lighting This category includes all types of architectural lighting applications – interior or exterior;permanent or temporary installations. Judges will be looking for visually appealing projects with creative technical solutions. Architectural Models Whichever form is your favorite—virtual or analog, interior or exterior, landscaping or urban— show the world how you build, just at a smaller scale. Your model does not need to have come to fruition. All scaled architecture types are eligible. Building Renovation Building Renovation Civic Institutions This category is in pursuit of educational, academic, governmental, or social institutions whose design not only elevates, but also is central to the organization’s mission. Digital Fabrication We’re seeking the best architectural applications of building components. These can be digital fabrications or parametric designs. Facade Facade Interior, Non-Residential Interior, Non-Residential Interior, Residential Interior, Residential Landscape Landscape Residential, Multi-Unit Residential, Multi-Unit Residential, Single Family Residential, Single Family Student Work Projects that are built or unbuilt are eligible. Students must be in an accredited architectural school or graduated from their program with in the last academic year. Temporary Installation Whether your installation is a site-specific exhibition or it created an entirely new site, enter your work that showcases materials, techniques, and invention. Unbuilt Any building project that got left behind or didn’t get it’s chance to see the light of day—a second or non-placing competition entry, a project for a client who decided to go another route, etc.—this category gives your projects in the drawers a second chance. Urban Design Built or unbuilt, enter your design plans that focus on groupings of buildings, streets, and public spaces intended to create a more sustainable and functional city or neighborhood. Young Architects Award Emerging architects or firms often have the talent but don’t always get the glory. This category seeks to celebrate the work of young practices (10 years or less) or professionals (35 years of age or less). Amale Andraos is Dean of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and a co-founder of WORKac, which has achieved international recognition for projects such as the Edible Schoolyard at PS216, the Centre de Conferences in Libreville, Gabon and the New Holland Island Cultural Center in St. Petersburg. Current projects include the Miami Collage Garage and a residential conversion of a historic cast-iron building. She has taught at many institutions including Princeton and Harvard. Her books include 49 Cities and the forthcoming Architecture and Representation: the Arab City . arch.columbia.edu Amale Andraos Dean Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation Since joining Snøhetta in 2011 Nick has been actively involved with the design and construction of exterior public spaces on the firm’s projects. He is currently working on two projects under construction; the Times Square Reconstruction project and the renovation and expansion of the French Laundry grounds in Yountville, CA. He is also currently managing the construction documentation for the landscape design of the new Temple University Library. Academically trained as an architect, at the University of Pennsylvania, he brings a technical and detailed eye to designing the public realm. Currently, K/R has five projects under way in the Miami Design District as well as other projects in Miami Beach, Coconut Grove, New York City and locations throughout the world. Riley served as the Philip Johnson Chief Curator for Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art (1991-2006), where he curated critical exhibitions on both historical figures as well as contemporary architects. From 2006 until 2010, Riley was director and design consultant for the Miami Art Museum (MAM), leading the institution through a transformative process of planning and designing a new waterfront facility. www.krnyc.com Terence Riley Founding Partner Keenen/Riley Ali Tayar was born in Istanbul in 1959 and studied architecture at the University of Stuttgart and MIT. In 1993, he formed Parallel Design Parnership, through which he designs and produces furniture and hardware. These pieces, as well as Tayar’s architectural work, derive from twin imperatives of structural behavior and the methods of mass-production.
